Dedicated skater finds time to succeed at PA Cyber

For 12-year old Mickayla Eberly, time was always something she had very little of.

A dedicated figure skater since elementary school, Mickayla’s daily schedule over the past few years has consisted of rushing from school in York to practice in Harrisburg, more than an hour away, and then back in time to finish her homework, eat and rest—just to do it all over again the next day.

“It was just beginning to be too much,” said Mickayla.

Mickayla’s coach noticed that her schedule was taking its toll on her, and suggested that she look in to PA Cyber.

“My coach actually suggested PA Cyber to my parents. Another skater who trained with him was enrolled in PA Cyber and it was working out great for him, so my parents decided to look into it.”

Mickayla’s mom Debra said that while there were many things that drew her to PA Cyber, the time flexibility was one of the biggest.

“There aren’t many kids who put in two-and-a-half to three hours a night skating non-stop. And now with the summer she’s skating eight hours a day, two days a week so it’s very strenuous and time consuming,” said Debra. “So the flexibility PA Cyber offered was great because it allows her to stay focused and on schedule.”

The majority of Mickayla’s classes are self-paced, which allow her to set her own schedule, balancing class, homework and studying with practice, competing and traveling. “I find the self-paced classes really helpful with getting ahead. Plus when I travel for events, I don’t have to worry about missing any classes.”

Mom Debra said that the PA Cyber is the perfect fit for Mickayla—who’s already excelling in classes far beyond her parents expectations.

“For the most part she’s an A/B student and I never expected that, especially because this was her first year in. I figured she would have to get used to getting everything done at her own pace and staying on task but she did really well.”

As Mickayla continues to train, with her eye on one day skating for Disney on Ice, Debra says they’ll continue to learn with PA Cyber.

“The curriculum is comprehensive and challenging, the support we get is great, and Mickayla loves it.”
